Mayfield Haven was purchased by Port Stephens Veterans and Citizens Aged Care in 2010 for use by the elderly community of the Tomaree Peninsula.
Centrally located in Mayfield, the house is a place to stay for elderly people who are receiving on-going treatment in the John Hunter, the Mater, the Royal Newcastle Centre or private hospitals in Newcastle. The house is also available for relatives or carers who wish to stay in the house to visit their loved one in hospital.
This convenient service will assist in reducing travel costs when treatments require a daily trip to the hospital or when relatives need to visit their sick loved one on a daily basis. Our purpose built "home away from home" provides four double bedrooms, three upstairs and one downstairs. Bedrooms are wheelchair accessible however; entry to the house upstairs involves a flight of stairs.
Upstairs (Rooms 1,2 & 3) have a shared toilet and bathroom, fully equipped kitchen, dining and living room.
Down stairs (Room 4) is private and particularly suitable for people with reduced mobility. It incorporates a kitchenette, living room and dining area. However, the fully equipped kitchen upstairs is accessible via stair lift. There is a TV in both living areas with free to air channels, and DVD player.
To maintain a normal home environment and routine, people staying within the house undertake daily living tasks such as food preparation and basic cleaning.
